FREE Student Vocabulary Practice

Student Practice is a new feature made available by Formative™. It is currently in "Early Access."
Student Practice allows students to study and practice flashcards at their own pace in multiple learning modes.
My flashcards made with Student Practice help students learn, review and master the vocabulary from my science units.
These resources are 100% free and accessible to teachers, students and families. No account or subscription is required.

How to use Formative Practice Sets

Getting Started

Choose a Vocabulary Practice Set from this page.
Choose your learning mode (flashcards, match or quiz).
Click “Start” to begin your practice immediately. Alternatively, you can select the background color you prefer by clicking on “Change Background” and then click on the Start button.
Tip: Close out the learning mode pop-up to review the terms. Click the flashcards to review the definitions on the back-side of the cards. Choose a practice mode by clicking “Practice” in the upper right corner.
Tip: Clicking the back arrow at the top left corner of your screen will redirect you to the Practice page.
Tip: Turn sound affects on/off by clicking on the settings icon at the top right of the screen.

Using Flashcards

The front side of flashcards will be presented to you one at a time. Try to answer to yourself.
Click on the flashcard to turn it over to the back side. Check your knowledge in comparison with the back side of the flashcard.
If you got it right click on the green “Got it” button; if you did not get it right click on the red ” Didn’t get it” button. Any flashcards marked “Didn’t get it” will be presented again at random and the practice will continue until you get all your practice flashcards right.

Using Match

Several cards containing the front-side or the back-side of flashcards will be presented. Not ALL flashcards will necessarily be presented and not ALL of them will have a match at any given moment.
Click on pairs of matching cards as you identify them. Correct pairs will disappear from the screen and be replaced with new cards.
Watch the timer on the right side corner.
Collect points as you go:
- 100 points for matching on first attempt.
- 75 points for matching on second attempt.
- 50 points for matching on third attempt or more
When you’re done, your time and points will be presented.
Click “Play Again” to try to beat your time or “Exit” if you’ve had enough.

Using Quiz

One front-side card is presented along with four back-side cards.
Choose the front-side card that matches the back-side.
Continue practicing until you get all the matches correctly.

Editing Practice Sets

Practice Sets cannot be edited.

To accommodate various learners, I created multiple, smaller vocabulary sets for a given unit and “chunked” vocabulary for subtopics. In other words, I did not create one large, differentiated vocabulary set for each unit but rather several, targeted vocabulary sets for each unit.

Copying & Sharing Practice Sets

Practice Sets cannot be copied or cloned.

You are welcome to share links to my Practice Sets. A link for a specific Practice Set can be generated with the “copy link” button at the top of the practice page. Links to all my Practice Sets are available on this page (https://www.stephanieelkowitz.com/vocabulary-review/).

Student Data & Formative Privacy Policy

Students do not register or create an account with Formative when using Practice Sets. Personal data is not collected.
